Car Companion

Well, it’s been a while in the making, then sat there for a while on my PC. I finally made the effort and have put my car sharing website live. Not sure how much it will be used (if at all), but I thought it’d be good to have such an easy-to-use way of collating journeys, so that drivers and passengers can share costs and reduce pollution at the same time.

I originally got the idea from the Mitfahrer scheme in Germany, which has successfully operated in Germany for many years (and predates the emergence of the World Wide Web). When I was studying in Potsdam, Germany in 1992/93, it was a common scheme, allowing students in particular to share cars on long journeys across Germany (or even abroad). Back then, it operated by phone. About five years ago I thought about putting together such a web-based scheme for the UK, but didn’t get round to it until recently.

I’m not sure how well it fits in with British culture (are we all too cynical and suspicious of others?), but, hey, I’ve got nothing to lose, so it’s there if anyone wants to use it.
